Interface transfer rate

UDMA6 = Ultra ATA 133 = 133MB/s

SATA I = 1.5 Gbit/s. Consider 8b/10b encoding, actual transfer rate = 1.2Gbit/s = 150 MB/s (1.2 / 8 = 0.15)
SATA II = 3.0 Gbit/s. Consider 8b/10b encoding, actual transfer rate = 2.4Gbit/s = 300 MB/s (2.4 / 8 = 0.3)
SATA III = 6.0 Gbit/s. Consider 8b/10b encoding, actual transfer rate = 600 MB/s
. SSD (especially SandForce SSD controller) can use the full speed of SATA III
. HDD , DRAM cache can also increase the performance and use the SATAIII speed.

PCIe
gen1: 250MB/s per lane (2Gbit/s?) spec: data rate 250MB/s ; transfer rate 2.5 GT/s
gen2: 500MB/s per lane (4Gbit/s?) spec: data rate 500MB/s ; transfer rate 5.0 GT/s
so, SATAIII host controller should have 2 lanes of PCIe gen1

USB
1.0 12 Mbit/s = 1.5MB/s
2.0: 480 Mbit/s = 60 MB/s
3.0 5.0 Gbit/s, raw throughput 4 Gbit/s, consider overhead 3.2Gbit/s = 400MB/s

. in 2010, HDD raid 0 throughput < 300 MB/s, so it seems enough
. but SSD is another story...

P55/H55/H57, cpu built-in 16 * pcie gen2, chipset PCH also supplies 6 * pcie gen2 (but 2.5GT/s mode)
gigabyte solution: standard: use PCH channels. turbo: use CPU channels
asus solution: use PEX8613. combine 4 PCH channels into 2 "REAL" pcie gen2
MSI solution: like asus.
